Ingi Fernandez, is a multidisciplinary Scandinavian creative. He involves himself with both design and arts. Ingi’s art and design interests was heavily inspired by his father a naval mechanic engineer and his mother a self-taught interior decorator with a natural talent for creating polished and stylish interiors. Ingi enrolled into The Polytechnic School of Breiðholt in Iceland, where he majored in Business administration but due to his artistic tendencies he also took part of the fine arts program at the same school. In fact those at school who saw his artworks though he was majoring in fine arts not business. Years after getting a business degree. Ingi’s professional interest would shift towards a more artistic education with focus crafts and design. With a portfolio under his arm he went for an interview at the Technical College of Hafnarfjörður in Iceland. The school had just opened a new inspiring diploma education in Crafts & Design. There he studied wide set of skills related to crafts making as well as being able to design and produce them by hand. The education was technical and hands on, developing projects while practicing various designs and craft skills such as: blacksmithing, welding, soldering, various metal work, jewellry making, woodworking, working with plastics, making both artistic objects as well as functional design like furniture and lighting design products. The Technical College of Hafnarfjörður would teach drawing both as an artistic expression and technical drawing. Learning to operate CNC machines and other large precise machinery for both metal and woodwork. After finishing his diploma study in Crafts & Design. His professors encouraged Ingi to seek further education with a specialization in the field of Industrial design. With a strong portfolio of both art and design works Ingi secured himself an entrance exam at the prestigious Danish Design School, and would get admitted the same year as a student at the department of Industrial design. Where he graduated with, BA and later with a MA in Industrial design. The Scandinavian design education left him with a mindset of creating detailed finishes in combination with functionality and beauty. The education was focused on deep understanding of the design problem at hand driven by research and experimental prototyping approach. Students learned modelling skills to develop their ideas and concepts through form studies and functional studies, innovative and strategically oriented designs. Developing a strong design process from the idea towards a final refined industrial product. Designing was not the only thing that interested Ingi while studying at the Danish Design School, there he would make good friends with various students and professors, the professors where either working artist or designers so there where many vivid discussions taking place that lead Ingi’s interest to the Scandinavian design methods of teaching design. This interest would later on develop into a long teaching carrier in higher design education. After finishing his BA degree in industrial design Ingi wanted to dive deeper into form and shape studies, but now from a sculptural point of view. He applied for the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Art at the Department of Sculpture. He got accepted and his stay at the academy helped him to form and develop his artistic identity. The education was both in classical and modern sculpture. Very demanding study enriched with active visits from internationally renowned artist, workshops, and critics from experienced and passionate academic professors at the academy. Ingi focused mainly on sculptural works. He also worked with large format 4x5 cameras developing fine art photography in black and white. He was also involved in oil painting studies. Exhibitions where part of the study, and Ingi exhibited his work in a group exhibition at a sculptural park in Copenhagen, as well as taking part in the final exams of the department of sculpture the Exit exhibition at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Visual Art. While living in Copenhagen, Ingi traveled to Istanbul in Turkey, where he collaborated on a design consultation project as well as travelling the country. This experience led to Ingi move to Istanbul. Ingi has his own design home studio in the heart of the city of Istanbul. He has been teaching industrial design to students in higher education in Istanbul for over a decade now. His teaching focuses on design thinking, facilitating creative problem solving with innovation focus in product development. Ingi´s design and art works have been exhibited in Iceland, Denmark and Turkey. Ingi is ever evolving and is open to new opportunities and exploration.
